Work Is Fun
Savage is chockfull of hard working, dedicated individuals, but we like to have some fun, too. In an initiative to facilitate the little kid in all of us, we established a Fun Committee.
Savage is chockfull of hard-working, dedicated individuals, but we like to have some fun, too. In an initiative to facilitate the little kid in all of us, we established a Fun Committee. I think this is such a great way to not only keep the fun in the workplace but also to get to know your colleagues…you do spend the majority of your time with them!
If you want to propose a Fun Committee at your workplace, it’s important to talk to your employees and see what type of activities they would participate in. We try to cover all of our bases by having activities during work and after work, and having things exclusively for employees, but also give them the opportunity to include their families in some events.
While some may argue that “forced fun” has the opposite effect on a workplace, like Schumpeter’s, Down with Fun, we really agree with Stephanie Orma’s article in How Magazine, Turn Downtime into Playtime. She quoted Will Burke, CEO and Creative Director of Brand Engine, who said, “Downtime is a chance to relax and get away from the daily work, let your body and mind recharge, and, more importantly, play.”
Here are a few fun ideas for your workplace:
- Potluck Lunch
- Drop secret gift on everyone’s desk
- Walk around with ice cream on a hot day
- Events (bowling, go-cart racing, cocktails, pool/darts, mini-golf, etc.)
- Massages
- Happy hours in the office
- Bring in breakfast
- Parties with families
- Have employees share their inspirations
