Good on Purpose: Powerful Design Creates Real Change

Savage believes in the power of using our talent for good. That’s why we established Savage Good, an initiative that provides strategic creative services to nonprofit organizations on a pro bono basis. Through Savage Good, powerful design has changed the lives of hundreds of people.

Now, Savage is encouraging other designers to use their talents to enact change in our Good on Purpose exhibit at the Pratt Institute‰’s Graduate Communication Design Gallery. The show will celebrate our purpose by featuring several of the best projects from Savage Good.

One such project is a handbook for parents of premature babies that explains some of the more complex health issues facing their new child with simple language and clear design. The purpose of the project is to provide education and comfort for parents of preemies in a time of need, a mission close to the heart of Savage Vice President and Principal Doug Hebert, the father of a premature infant himself.

Another project is inspired by the goal of transforming schools into safe places for all, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. The Savage Good team created a brochure for GLSEN to help educators recognize the signs of bullying and to help students understand the harmful effects of hateful behavior.

These purpose-driven designs are just two among several to be featured in the show as a way to demonstrate how design makes a serious impact on community organizations, and to move other talented individuals to participate with their own skills.

As Hebert explains, ‰”This is an opportunity for us to show students and designers what design is capable of doing beyond the obvious, and the personal value that strategic design has toward transforming lives and in creating change.”

When designers think about purpose, they can change lives. When companies think about purpose ‰- what they can contribute to the world outside of profits ‰- they can change the world. That belief is at the heart of our purpose at Savage.
